A learning
management system is a software application for
the administration, documentation, tracking, reporting and delivery of
electronic educational technology. This is also called e-learning.[1]
The Learning Management System range from systems for managing
training and educational records to
software for distributing online or blended/ Hybrid College courses over the Internet with features for online collaboration. Colleges, universities, school districts, and schools use LMSs to deliver online courses and augment on-campus courses. Learning management system also act to augment the lessons the teacher is giving in a brick and mortar environment, not just replace them.
Corporate training departments use LMSs to deliver online training, as well as to automate record-keeping and employee registration.[2]

History of learning management system.
The application of computers to education is filled with generic
terms such as computer-based instruction (CBI), computer-assisted instruction
(CAI), and computer-assisted learning (CAL), generally describing
drill-and-practice programs, more sophisticated tutorials, and more
individualized instruction. The history of another term of learning management
is called Integrated learning management system (ILS), which offers
additional functionality beyond instructional content such as management and
tracking, more personalized instruction, and integration across the system. ILS
(Integrated learning management system) also was originally coined by Jostens
Learning, and LMS was originally used to describe the management system part of
the PLATO K-12 learning system, content-free and separate from the courseware.
The term is currently used to describe a number of different educational computer
applications
Why it is important at school
Because it is to set up and use. The instructor didn’t wanted to
learn how to use new system and to teach their students, to use it. There needs
to be a lot of support available for all audiences. Also it needs to be
intuitive as possible to perform the required or expected functions.
Advantages Of Learning Management
System
·
Centralized Learning
The first benefit to using a learning
management system is it offers a centralized source of learning. This means
that the training, performance, and development content are offered at all
times from the same source. Multiple users can access the information at any
given time. These systems ensure consistency in the evaluation and delivery of
the material, meaning every user sees the same content through the same manner.
These systems let the user design customized training modules that can be used
to introduce new equipment, update equipment, or modify operating procedures.
·
Tracking and Reporting Features
The second benefit to using a learning
management system is that you can enhance performance through tracking and
reporting tools. Progress of new users can be tracked, records can be reviewed,
and users can register for more than one course. Employers are able to offer
the courses through web-based training, webinars, and other forms of
instructor-led training. Management can then access the records of those who
participated to analyze which areas need improvement. The learner can now put
in additional efforts in the areas that are difficult for them, because
learning management systems give users the ability to manipulate their learning
pace.
(With an LMS, you can report your
learner’s scores from ready to use e- learning game and develop faster than
ever before.)
·
Evaluation Capabilities
The third benefit to using a learning
management system is that it allows users to be evaluated before they take the
course, while they are in the course, and when they finish the course. This
means that employers can evaluate their retention levels through periodically
scheduling assignments. They can then review the records to determine the
levels of success. In educational settings, students can review their personal
performance based on quizzes and tests that are administered by the professors.
·
Easy Upgrades
The fourth benefit to using a learning
management system is that the content and information in the course can be
easily upgraded. Because the learning management system offers a centralized
location for information, it is simple to make a change to the forms,
requirements, product descriptions, or specifications. Users will get the same
upgraded information at the same time.
Disadvantages of
Learning Management System.
Even given all the benefits
of e-learning, one cannot deny there are some drawbacks. A good example of a
disadvantage of online learning is that practical skills are somewhat harder to
pick up from online resources. For example, although building a wooden table is
something you can easily share information about, record videos of and explain,
the practical experience is essential. Pottery and car engineering are examples
of skills that require hands-on experience.
Isolation
Though e-learning offers
ease, flexibility and the ability to remotely access a classroom in the
student’s own time, learners may feel a sense of isolation. This is because
learning online is a solo act for the most part, which may give the learner the
feeling that they are acting completely alone. As technology progresses and
e-learning benefits from the advancements being made, learners can now engage
more actively with professors or other students using tools such as video
conferencing, social media, and discussion forums amongst others.
Health Related Concerns
E-learning requires the use
of a computer and other such devices; this means that eyestrain, bad posture
and other physical problems may affect the learner. When running an online
course it’s a good practice to send out guidelines about correct sitting
posture, desk height, and recommendations for regular breaks.[3]
Conclusion
This is a software which
used to ease the people who works at office. everyone can use this application
to save their time at office. Currently we all are using technological
things.so we should have to try to use new things for their situations...

This is a very good and informative article. It has almost every basic information about learning management system .
